At Falck, we save and improve lives. This promise has made Falck a global leader in EMS and for more than 100 years. In 2017, Falck launched a new strategy to become more focused, develop global standard operating models and become industry leaders in our core business areas. Part of this journey for Falck is to explore and develop new solutions and thinking that will keep us at the frontier of the EMS industry. Falck will take part in developing prehospital care through new technologies, new business models, new partnerships and new skills to allow us to be smart about saving and improving even more lives.

Therefore, Falck Ambulance Denmark is now offering one ideal candidate a unique opportunity to get involved in a multidisciplinary environment with a focus on academic and personal development. This will be through employment as an industrial/business PhD student in the subject of prehospital innovation, diagnostics, and in-home treatment and monitoring.

In this role, the candidate will be able to create impact and value on many levels; to our patients, to our global organization, to the services we deliver and to the EMS industry in general. This is an incredible opportunity to help shape an innovation agenda at Falck and the future of EMS.

The programme

An Industrial PhD is an industrially focused research project which is conducted jointly by a private sector company, an Industrial PhD student and a university. The Industrial PhD student is employed by a company in Denmark and at the same time enrolled at a university.

The project

The population is aging, and the number of chronic disease patients is increasing. That exerts pressure on hospitals and healthcare systems to create holistic solutions benefitting both patients and society at large. Treating patients at point-of-first-contact and reducing the need for hospital visits is, therefore, becoming more and more relevant.

Falck is part of the healthcare system, and it is partly our responsibility to develop prehospital solutions to the benefit of all. We hypothesize that by expanding the role of EMS, we can provide even better health services by minimizing hospital admissions and further enhance the quality of care.

The candidate will have a strong impact on the scope and direction of the project, as the first task will be to gather our visions into a research proposal and to complete a grant application. We imagine, that the first part of the project will explore current scientific literature on the subject. Then, the candidate will, in close collaboration with our patients, customers, and EMS personnel explore the use of innovative and advanced monitoring tools. These could be portable monitoring devices and point-of-care technologies with the scope of supporting decision making and evolving the ability to treat and monitor certain patients in the safety of their own homes. Finally, we imagine, that the project will identify and define the role of EMS in the intersection between primary and secondary sector, with the scope of enhancing in-home care, treatment and monitoring of these patients.

The company supervisor will be Business Quality Manager Jannie Laursen (RN, PhD), dept. of Quality and Development. Further, one of our medical doctors will serve as company co-supervisor. We are currently investigating university collaboration.

The candidate

A high level of independence and ability to perform cross-functional team work is expected, and we look for a highly-motivated candidate with a sense of adventure to jump in and grow with us.

Applicants should hold a relevant non-Danish or 2-year Danish masters degree in healthcare, social sciences, medical innovation or related fields. Knowledge of emergency medical patients or even the prehospital system is considered great advantages. Excellent abilities in written and spoken English and a Danish work permit are required.
